Back in the summer (you remember that, right? Before we had all this bitterly cold winter weather.. oh yeah, right) Google announced on their Webmaster Central Blog (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com) that they were now supporting authorship markup (http://goo.gl/C6rlq). A lot of people got very excited by this, but it’s surprising just how few people are either doing anything about this, or doing it the right way. So in today’s post here’s a quick practical guide to what you should be doing to take advantage of authorship markup.

Author Writing

On web pages where you have an article, blog post or content written which includes your name, use the following anchor text hyperlink format to link your name to your profile page (such as your Google profile page or LinkedIn profile page)

<a href=”https://plus.google.com/YOUR-PROFILE-ID” rel=”author”>YOUR NAME</a>.

On your profile pages, including those within sites such as article directories and blogs use the following link format:

<a rel=”me” href=”https://plus.google.com/ YOUR-PROFILE-ID “> <img src=”IMAGE-ICON.PNG”> </a>

Notice that you use the ‘rel=”author“‘ format on pages which contain your content and you use the ‘rel=”me“‘ format on your profile pages.

By doing this you will be linking all of your content up in a way which will help ensure more of your content gets seen and found by more of those people who have already come across some of your content or your profile. Using this method you are able to take ownership of your content in a way which makes a big difference within the search results.
